David Morris


David started trumpet studies in 1966 privately with Mr. Heilman in Pittsburgh, PA. After 6 months, he was sitting in the concert band and orchestra programs through junior high school and then on to Baldwin Sr. High School where he was first trumpet concert band, orchestra, marching band and also student drill instructor
for the marching band his junior and senior year. During this time, he also played with local casual bands, The Polaras, and Bel Aire recording artists The Trel-Tones, which gave him his first studio recording experience. David started studying music at Allegheny Community College main campus in Pittsburgh but was drafted in
1972. He auditioned for the Air Force field bands and spent the next 6 years as featured soloist with The Band of the West, The Band of Hawaii, The Band of the Pacific, and the US Air Force Band at March AFB, California. During this time, he also played lead for the jazz bands, rock bands, Dixieland bands and a Mexican polka
band. After discharge, he studied at the Dick Grove Music Workshops in Studio City, CA. The instructors were Dick Grove, Alan Ferguson, Lalo Shifron, Sammy Nestico and Alf Clausen, among other notables. While in Hawaii, he played the shows on Wakiki and casuals. In California, he also studied trumpet with Gary Grant, Jerry Hey and played with The Harry James Orchestra, The McGuire Sisters, Paul Horn and The Bruce Campbell Band. David has a background in everything from Polish & Mexican polkas to nightclub acts, big band jazz, and orchestral work. Currently, he donates his time to local pit orchestras for school productions, The Summer Youth Theatre and The Boals Barn Playhouse. David has played with The Keystone Society of Swing, Swingin Dixie, and The Les Shaw Dance Band locally. His students have performed in the state bands, concert bands and jazz bands throughout the area. He is co-director of The Central PA Youth Jazz Experience. He recently became the Band Director for the UUFCC Big Band in State College.
